History

The City of Pilot Mound is in the north central portion of Boone County, Iowa.  Pilot Mound had an estimated population of 200.  It is home to the largest mound within Boone County.  Pilot Mound was laid out on September 8, 1881 and is in the township of the same name.  Before the town existed there was a post office also named Pilot Mound. The Pilot Mound area was also witness to an Indian battle between the Sac and Fox under Chief Keokuk and the Sioux under Chief Wamsapasia.  The Keokuk emerged triumphant, but the remains of many Indians killed in battle were found in the region.
